LEARN NO-ENGINE GAME DEV

Want to learn how to make a video game from scratch without wasting years on trial and error?

the problem:

Game Dev is fu*king hard

I ain't gonna sugar coat it.It feels like there's a thousand different things you need to learn before seeing any real progress. Now while it may feel this way. It actually isn't that bad.Hear me out.Over the years I've spent hours upon hours... wasting my time. (for lack of a better way to put it)Yes, with game dev there are many things that could be done at any given moment.BUT... only a small handful of them actually matter. So how do you tell which ones matter and which don't?

Well, I see two options...

#1
Brute force it with trial and error.Spend a lot of time working on things that don't actually get you anywhere, until you've done so much of, what not to do, that you realise what matters.(this is what I did for the last 8 years by the way)

#2
Find someone who's further ahead than you on the journey, and learn from their mistakes.Skip over all the dead ends, and have confidence that what you're working on will get you to where you want to go.
(a finished game)

If you think option #2 sounds a lot easier and more enjoyable, that's what this is for.I've just revamped my mentorship program and opened up some new slots.

What This Solves...

There are two main problems I see again and again from people trying to learn game dev.

#1 - Tactical Programming Knowledge

This one is pretty straightforward. You're trying to get some end result, for example...> Having a guy moving on screen and whacking enemies in a way that feels GREAT.The problem here being that it feels like there's 10 big things you need to do before even starting on that.Like...

  1. loading images & creating a sprite system

  2. writing a renderer

  3. making an animation system

  4. creating an entity structure

  5. programming enemy AI

  6. building a physics system

  7. detecting collision

  8. creating an audio playback system

  9. ...

and the list goes on.

I have some good news though.
Each of these has a very simple concept, system or library that you can just yoink from me instead. There are so many easy hacks and shortcuts you can use when programming without an engine. The problem is, usually it takes years of trial and error to learn these lessons the hard way.But with this mentorship program. Instead, just copy-paste what I've already proven to work, and move on.Get back to focusing on what really matters...Building the game you want to make.

THE NEXT BIGGEST PROBLEM:

GAME DESIGN

So you've got some tech under you...But you don't know how to create a playable game that other people will enjoy. This one is a relatively easy fix.But it involves focusing on a handful of tasks that give a 10x return, while ignoring the rest.I've got some more good news though...

IT'S JUST ANOTHER SKILL

Game design can be taught, practiced, and honed. But it doesn't come from reading a book...There are actions you can repeat on a daily basis to build your game design muscles. It took me way too long to learn this. But when I did. I went from trying & failing to make a game for 4 years,To having my first playable prototype done in just a few weeks.

I used to think the answer to making a game was to just keep working on new systems and tech.
But it was the exact opposite. You need to observe another person playing your game. Until then, you are guessing at what your game actually is.At this point. I've helped myself & others break through this wall many times.I know some tricks that work really well, and what to avoid at all costs. If you'd like me to walk you through it personally, this is the first thing I do in my mentorship program.
